Message from Head Teacher Welcome to the Great Wishford Primary School website. As head teacher of this organisation I feel delighted to be able to give you a flavour of our school and our learning community through this media. The school has walked an amazing journey, moving from a three class to a five class school and from a ‘first’ to a ‘primary’ school. We have not only increased the number of classrooms to accommodate the increased pupil numbers, but also enhanced and improved several other areas within the school to help improve the learning environment and the aesthetic appeal of the school. These developments include a purpose-built hall, increased space and resources for indoor & outdoor learning in the Early Years, improved staffroom facilities, an SEN base, an organic Victorian garden, a pond area, an outdoor ‘chill out’ zone, a trim trail, re-developed the ‘wild area’ and most recently the refurbishment of the school toilets. As a small rural school we feel it is vital to engage with the community in which we are based. This has brought with it rich learning opportunities not only for the curriculum learning but also in developing skills for life; helping pupils to support the community they are part of and to appreciate the many ways in which they can gain greater awareness & understanding of the world around them. The school has strong links with the Great Wishford Oak Apple Club and annually joins with the village community at Salisbury Cathedral on May 29th to claim the ancient rights of the village to access Grovely Woods. The school regularly liaises with Wilton Estate to carry out art, science & environmental projects in the woods and also has successfully run 3K & 10K fun runs through part of the woods & the local village. The setting up of a trout hatchery, with the valued expertise & support of our local river keeper Adrian Symmonds and visits to the River Wylye not only to release the trout fry but also learn more about a ‘chalk’ river system, provide wonderful opportunities for the pupils to learn respect for and safety around such natural features in their locality. The school also has close links with the five parish churches that feed into our school. Annual ‘Harvest Supper’ & Advent ‘Posada’ services are held within the school hall and several community services are planned over the year in the various churches to allow are two communities to come together in worship. These are only a few of the links built up with our community. We are also very involved in the local sports’ clubs and music provision around our locality and wherever possible send representation in these events. As you can see, we are not a school to stand still. We are ever looking to refine, improve and extend the opportunities for our pupils, parents and staff and welcome ideas and feedback from those who join us. We very much hope that you will become part of our school community and help us to continue our amazing journey! Ali Jenkins Head Teacher
