The School

Great Wishford Primary School is a Church of England Aided School.  The school is situated in the delightful semi-rural setting of the attractive village of Great Wishford approximately 6 miles north west of Salisbury in the Wylye Valley.

Great Wishford school has a long and interesting history and is one of the oldest working schools in Wiltshire.  The original listed building, adjacent to the road, dates from 1722 and is the year 5/6 Gold Classroom.  A Victorian addition now forms the staff room and kitchenette.  In 1961 the school was significantly enlarged by the addition of three classrooms, an entrance foyer and classroom facilities.  In 1997 a conservatory was added which is now used as a library and meeting room.  Internal building work occurred in the Spring Term of 2002 in which the staff room, entrance hall, office, head’s office and kitchenette were re-designed and redecorated.  This  greatly enhanced the working environment for both pupils and adults within the organisation. More building work in 2005 saw the addition of a fourth classroom and a new hall and re-designed Reception/Year 1 classroom and outdoor area.

During the Summer of 2008 further developments were undertaken to move our 5th Classroom in the mobile within the main school building and to redevelop the mobile to accommodate the pre-school.  This has allowed for enhanced opportunities for liaison with the Pre-school and Year R pupils and parents. A communal area has now been created for both these groups to mix in.
The school grounds are extensive and have been developed over the years.  They include a tarmac play area, a wild area, pond and a very large grassed area for sports and games, an Early Years enclosed garden, a Key Stage 2 quiet garden and a Victorian vegetable and herb patch.  We are continuing to re-develop these to include further KS2 garden, a creative play area.  Playtimes and lunchtimes are structured to allow for a variety of physical activities and team game activity zones.

There are 113 pupils on roll aged 4 to 11 years of age.  Our feeder secondary school is Salisbury High School, over the years pupils have tended to transfer to a wider range of secondary schools which now include, Kingdown in Warminster, Lavington in Devizes, Stonehenge in Amesbury, St. Edmunds Girls and St. Josephs RC in Laverstock, Salisbury or South Wilts and Bishop Wordsworth Grammar schools if pupils are entered (by parents) and are successful at the 11+ examination. Our pupils come from the villages of Great Wishford and the surrounding villages of South Newton, Stoford, Stapleford, Berwick St. James and Winterbourne Stoke.  We also have children from Wilton, Barford St Martin, Warminster, Amesbury and Durrington as well as areas of Salisbury.

As a church school, we hope to create an ethos of care and concern expressed in the quality of relationships within the school.  It is our intention that Christian values should quietly permeate the whole process of education and enhance the quality of curriculum on offer.  The School Values are clearly displayed within the school: daily assemblies are led by the Head teacher, staff and local priest.  The Bridge Project are regular visitors and we also welcome outside speakers from a range of organisations to help and promote our values.

School Links

The school has close links with the village church .  We currently have 14 Governors including 1 additional  Associate Governor.  There is a Friends of the School Associate, which not only raises money for the school but is also closely involved in the daily life of the school.

The school has strong links with Grovely Pre-school, who rent our Early Years room and feed into the school.

The school also has developed many links with the wider community and takes part yearly in the traditional village Oak Apple Day celebrations on May 29th each year.  The Oak Apple museum is also located in Gold Classroom, the original 1722 building.

Ethos Statement

The school aims to serve its community by providing an education of the highest quality within the context of Christian education and of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice.  It encourages an understanding of the meaning and significance of faith and promotes Christian values through the experience it offers to all its pupils.
