Geography at Great Wishford C of E Primary School

No challenge too big, no child too small- for with God nothing will be impossible (Luke 1:37)

Our Geography Intent:                     Frodsham Manor House Primary School - Geography

In Geography, we aim to provide our children with the opportunities to become global citizens, deepening their interest and wonder in exploring the world and their own place in it. Through our curriculum our children will develop a sense of their world at the local, national and global scales understanding the interconnections between how people and the environment interact. Pupils are taught and encouraged to ask questions and think critically, think spatially, use maps, visual images and different forms of technologies, including geographical information systems to analyse and present information. They will have a thorough understanding of their responsibilities within their own society to enable them to become modern British Citizens, whilst also having a coherent insight into the sustainability of a dynamically changing world.

Implementation

Geography is taught from Early Years (as Understanding the World) through to Year 6. Throughout this time the children will learn new skills and knowledge, as well as further developing their understanding about what they already know. They will look closely at their own local area, and be able to compare it to different places, both nationally and globally, by evaluating the similarities and differences they see.  Geography is a focus within our curriculum for understanding and resolving issues about the environment and sustainable development.  As pupils study geography at Great Wishford, they will encounter different societies and cultures.  This will help them realise how nations rely on each other.  It can inspire them to think about their own place in the world, their values, and their rights and responsibilities to other people locally, nationally and in the wider world.  The children will learn the geographical skills needed to:

1. collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes

2.interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

3. communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length.

Impact

At Great Wishford the children will ask and answers questions about the natural and human worlds, using different scales of enquiry to view them from different perspectives. They will be able to better understand the diversity of their planet and be fuelled with a desire to explore more of it.  The children will have developed a knowledge of places and environments throughout the world, an understanding of maps, and a range of investigative and problem solving skills, both inside and outside the classroom and will be able to take this acquired learning into their future adult life and employment.
