Reading
Book: The Romans – Gods, Emperors and Formice
Theme: Conflict
In Guided Reading we have been exploring how the theme of service is portrayed throughout the story. In the lessons we:
- Read for fluency to develop our speed, accuracy, prosody and comprehension.
- Closely read small sections of the text to further understand the characters, plot and setting.
- Have book chat sessions where we discuss the book and other books we have previously read.
- Take part in extended reads where longer sections of the book are read.
- Complete assessment style questions.
Writing
Narrative
Book stimulus: The Pirates of Pompeii
Outcome: To retell part of the story focusing on creating a suspense atmosphere.
Non-fiction
Book stimulus: Letters from Pliny the Younger
Outcome: Write an informal letter linked to mystery stories
Grammar and Punctuation
As well as using the punctuation and grammar that we have been previously taught, we will learn about sentence structure. First of all recapping main clauses and then learning how to use subordinating conjunctions to create subordinate clauses.
Spelling - Spelling lessons will focus on short investigations of spelling rules and long investigations of tricky grapheme phoneme correspondences. We will also have individual Focus Five spellings to practice in our writing each week. These will come home on a weekly basis.
Maths
This term’s topics, following the White Rose Maths Scheme, version 3. It will review, consolidate and extend areas of mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem solving including:

RE
We are learning to re tell the Easter story and understand what Jesus’ resurrection means for Christians.
Question: Is it true that Jesus came back to life again?
Science
In Science we will be learning about living things and habitats. We will:
- Explore and compare the differences between things that are living, dead, and things that have never been alive.
- Group living things in a range of ways.
- Use classification keys to help group, identify vertebrates.
- Use a key to identify invertebrates found in the local environment.
- Create classification keys to help us group, identify and name leaves from local trees and hedgerow.
Geography
In Geography we will be learning about Volcanoes and Earthquakes. We will learn about the causes and outcomes of volcanoes and earthquakes, the distribution of them (The Pacific Ring of Fire), the measures taken to make life safer in earthquake zones and the issues caused by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
Art
We are going to be learning about Vincent Van Gogh this term. We will be explore the use of lines to create texture, depth and movement. We will also be developing our sketching techniques. At the end of the unit we will be creating portraits in the style of Vincent Van Gogh.
Computing
Journey inside a computer:
- Recognise inputs and outputs and that the computer sends and receives information.
- Explain that the parts of a laptop work together and the purpose of each part.
- Explain what an algorithm is.
- Suggest what memory is for inside a computer.
- Make comparisons between different types of computer.
PSHE
Dreams and Goals:
- We are learning discuss challenge and success.
- We are learning to identify dream ambitions and understand how it feels to achieve them.
- We are learning to work out ways of achieving new learning challenges by breaking them down into steps.
- We are learning to take responsibility for new learning challenges and understand what it means to feel motivated and enthusiastic.
- We are learning to recognise obstacles that could hinder our achievements and solve ways of overcoming them.
Music
In Music lessons wwe goingto be building up all of the skills we need to perform the song ‘Lean On Me’ by Bill Withers.
French
We are going to be learning about two new topics in French this term. The first topic is musical instruments and the second is animals.
